Planet Labs provides universal access to information about the changing planet. We will operate the world’s largest fleet of Earth imaging satellites to frequently image the entire planet and provide open access to that information.
We want to help people understand the planet and make better decisions. By giving people a view of the Earth in near real-time, we intend to spur people, companies, and governments to action. Planet Labs will be providing an entirely new data set -- unprecedented coverage and frequent imagery of the planet. This new information will inform future humanitarian, ecological and commercial endeavors.
The Blue Marble is a photograph of Earth taken by Apollo 17 astronauts in 1972 and is credited with popularizing the environmental movement. What the Blue Marble did for global awareness, Planet Labs will do for global action.
We are a purpose-driven company and we care deeply about positive impact through the use of information and space technologies. In addition to creating value for our commercial customers, our platform is being designed to allow people to detect deforestation, better understand agriculture yields, and give first responders relevant information immediately after a natural disaster.
We understand that our technology has the potential to reach billions of people, and we are determined to see it used responsibly. Two examples of this principle are built into our initial designs. Firstly, our platform does not jeopardize personal privacy. Users are able to see the canopy of a tree but cannot identify individual cars or persons. Secondly, we care about orbital space debris and have designed our satellites to fly in low orbits, operating safely away from the congested space environment at higher altitudes.
Provide Universal Access.
We are committed to transparency and we’ll work to make information available to those who need it the most. There are a myriad of potential uses for our data. The best way to tap into the full potential is to make it universally accessible with affordable pricing. With broad access to this information, users and developers will be able to innovate and create new tools and novel applications we could never have imagined.
Planet Labs is a team of scientists, engineers and developers that build and utilize space technology and computer systems for good. Making a positive impact on the world with technology is our passion.
The founders first met at an international conference that gathered young professionals to make policy recommendations on how space can benefit humanity. Over the last dozen years, they’ve worked together on a range of projects at the intersection of space and societal benefit.

Planet Labs Inc. is a purpose-driven space information company based in San Francisco, California. Founded in 2010, the company’s goal is to provide universal access to information about the changing planet. The company is founded by former NASA scientists and includes a team of leading venture capital investors, including Draper Fisher Jurvetson (DFJ), O’Reilly Alpha Tech Ventures (OATV), Capricorn Investment Group, Founders Fund Angel, Data Collective, First Round Capital, and Innovation Endeavors. Planet Labs Inc. was formerly called Cosmogia Inc.
We build space platforms using state-of-the-art technology. We design and build the satellites in San Francisco; we test the capabilities in the lab, on mountaintops, from airplanes and in space.
Dove Series of Satellites
In April 2013, Planet Labs launched two demonstration satellites to test technologies and operations on a space-based platform. The satellites, known as “Dove 1” and “Dove 2”, successfully accomplished their mission goals. Below is a selection of imagery from Dove 1 and Dove 2.
In November 2013, Planet Labs launched two more demonstration satellites on board a Dnepr rocket.
In early 2014, Planet Labs will launch the world’s largest constellation of Earth observing satellites.
Below is an image of the 28 spacecraft that make up Flock 1 just prior to being sent to the launch pad.
